WUSC Review: The Jayhawks – Mockingbird Time

Genre: Root-Rock/Alt. Country

RIYL: early Wilco, The Byrds, Gram Parsons, Neil Young

It’s been 16 years since Mark Olson left The Jayhawks arguably at their peak, although the band and Olson both soldiered on in their own regards. The band disbanded entirely in the early 00s, but Olson and Louris ended up recording a chilled out duo record in 2009, and now we have the first great alt. country reunion album on in Mockingbird Time. The band, quite honestly, seems to pick up right off where they left in Tomorrow. Louris and Olson fill this record with those close harmony, intertwining voices everywhere here, just like the early 90s Jayhawks at their best. The record definitely carries forward the immaculate, Beatlesque production of Tomorrow as well, and threads Dylan, Neil Young, The Byrds and the spirit of Gram Parsons through their songwriting and arrangements like they always have. Welcome back guys, we’re glad to have you.
